Toppers Get Talking

For a new student at Blue Mountain Christian University, it can be intimidating to find a place in a new environment. It can be difficult to make new friends or to find something to do outside of classwork. Building relationships with fellow classmates is a monumental part of the college experience. When looking to make new connections, it is helpful to know what is available to you.

One of the most active groups on campus is the Baptist Student Union. Located in Broach Baptist Student Union building at the top of the hill, the BSU welcomes new students to join their many activities. The BSU is a place where students can come together to worship Jesus and fellowship with one another. As a new student, the BSU is a great place to meet new people and build relationships with classmates.

The BSU hosts Prime Time, a Bible study and fellowship meeting, every Tuesday night at 7:00. This can be a great way to meet new friends and become more involved in campus activities. The BSU also hosts Noonday twice a week, a similar meeting where lunch is also served. Loren Cross, an active member of the BSU and a Social Committee Chair, shares about her experience with the BSU, stating, “The BSU offers students the opportunity to be in a loving community of Believers that are encouraging and like-minded, which is very important, especially when you are away from your family and home.” If you are looking to get involved on campus, the BSU is a great place to start. For updates on BSU events, you can use the BSU’s Instagram page, @bmcu.bsu.

Another great place to look when searching for an on-campus community is the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, or FCA. FCA meets every Monday night at 7:00 in the Blue Motion Building, offering relationship-building gatherings which include testimonies, worship, and, as the name states, Christian fellowship. While originally founded for athletes, FCA is not exclusive to athletes; they welcome any student to come be a part. Caroline Howard, a new student at BMCU and a member of FCA’s leadership team, shared that she got involved in FCA because she wanted to grow closer to Christ and find other Christian athletes to share her struggles with. If you want to know more about FCA, you can find regular updates on their Instagram page, @bmcu.fca.

Another way to get involved on campus is through attending campus activities that are sponsored by the Student Body Association. Every year, SBA plans and prepares for a variety of activities, including Sneakerball, a semi-formal event every fall, and Spring Formal, a formal dress event every Spring. SBA also hosts Worship Nights, a time for Christians to come together and worship, and a beauty pageant, BMCU Most Beautiful, every spring. Another fun activity put together by SBA is Toppers Got Talent, a student talent show hosted every fall. For more information and updates about events hosted by SBA, reference SBA’s Instagram @bmcu.sba.

There are many ways to get involved on campus, and these three organizations will give new students a great place to start. Participating in events hosted by these organizations is sure to be fun and help students meet new people and make new connections. New and returning students alike can find fun ways to get involved on campus and find new groups to socialize with through attending the campus activities hosted by these three organizations.
